Parliamentary Constituency Watch: Allahabad

Allahabad is one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. The constituency comprises five assembly segments namely and the district of Prayagraj. 

The Allahabad seat came into existence in 1952 and since then has remained a Congress-dominated constituency till 1973 losing out the seat in by-polls held in 1973 to JP.

In 1977, it was the BLD party that won the election only to see the return of INC in 1980 where INC remained in power till 1988. 

In the 1988 elections, an independent candidate won the seat followed by JD winning in 1989 and remaining in power till 1996. 

BJP first came to power in the constituency in 1996 and saw it reigning over the seat till 2004. The next two elections in 2004 and 2009 were won by SP. BJP staged a comeback in 2014 and managed to win in the 2019 election as well.

 In terms of success rate, INC enjoyed the highest success rate with 9.43% in the Allahabad parliamentary seat followed closely by BJP with 5.24% of success rate. However, in recent years it was the BJP that tasted the majority of success in the constituency.
