During the 2014 elections, the total number of electors was 19,03,988 and the turnout stood at 54.63%, in real numbers- 10,40,199 voters. 2019 witnessed a turnout increase; out of the 19,81,197 electors, 59.79% of voters exercised their constitutional rights. In real numbers- 11,84,635 voters.

Party Wise Vote Share

2019’s parliamentary election winner, BJP’s Ravindra Shyamnarayan gained a vote share of 60.50% and defeated SP’s Rambhual Nishad whose vote share stood at 35.10%. The other prominent candidates in the fray were INC’s Madhusudan Tripathi with a vote share of 1.90% and CPI’s Dr. Ashish Kumar Singh with 0.70% of vote share.

Party Wise Shift in Votes 

In 2014, BJP won the constituency and earned 5,39,127 votes followed by 7,17,122 votes in the 2019 election victory. On the other hand, SP garnered 2,26,344 votes in 2014 and 4,15,458 votes in the 2019 elections.

 The Gorakhpur constituency has been represented by a number of different parties over the years.  

In 1952 the Indian National Congress (INC) claimed victory, marking the start of its dominance in Indian politics. The trend continued in 1957 and 1962, with the INC securing successive wins. However, in 1967, an independent candidate (IND) emerged as a victor, briefly breaking the INC’s hold. This trend continued until 1971 when INC regained power. A significant shift occurred in 1977 with the Janata Party (JP) emerging as the winner.

In the years that followed, INC regained power in 1980 and 1984. The late 1980s marked a turning point with the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which secured multiple victories from 1991 to 2019, except for a brief interlude in 2018 when the Samajwadi Party (SP) made its mark.

In terms of the success rate in securing the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat, both BJP and the INC had exhibited the highest rate of success over the years, standing at 42% and 32% respectively. Among other prominent parties, SP enjoyed a success rate of 5%. 

Gender Wise Distribution of Contestants 

During the 2009 elections, there were 26 contestants and all of them were male. In 2014, the total number of contestants decreased to 15, out of which 14 were male and 1 was female, in percentage- 93% and 7%.

In 2019, on the other hand, the total number of contestants further decreased to mere 10 with the participations being limited to males.  

Gender wise voter turnout 

In 2009, out of a total of 16,95,636 electors, 7,50,941 voters cast their ballots. Of the 9,45,405 male electors, 4,21,560 participated in the election, constituting a turnout rate of 45%. There were 7,50,231 female electors and of that, 4,70,482 chose to vote with a turnout rate of 44%.  

In 2014, there are 19,04,498 people who are eligible to vote and 10,40,199 of them chose to exercise their right to vote. Out of these, 10,55,476 were male electors and 8,49,022 were female electors. 54% of male electors (5,69,717) and 55% of female electors (4,70,482) cast their ballots.   

    Gender Wise Voter Turnout  

The total count of electors in 2019 was 19,81,021 out of which 11,81,222 chose to cast their ballot in the parliamentary elections. Out of 10,85,534 male electors, only 58% voted which is 6,27,713 male voters in real numbers. On the other hand, the voter turnout for females stood at 62% which translates to 5,53,509 voters out of a total of 8,95,487 female electors in real number.
