UP Phase-3: A Report

The third phase of Uttar Pradesh’s assembly elections for 59 constituencies came to a close around 6 pm on Sunday. The voter turnout stood at around 61.61%, as per the ECI’s Voter Turnout app, hinting at a dip considering the 62.21 per cent turnout in 2017.

Out of the 627 candidates who competed for the 59 seats, 97 were women, 192 from the Scheduled Castes and one candidate represented the Scheduled Tribe category.11 seats fall under the reserved category. The seats are spread over 16 districts.

Overall, there were 2.16 crore voters — 1.16 crore men, 99 lakh women and 1060 third-gender voters. Voting was held across 25,794 polling booths and 15,557 voting centres. There were 641 model polling booths while 129 centres were operated by an all-women staff.

 Samajwadi Party’s stronghold- Karhal assembly seat witnessed a record turnout of 65.10% turnout compared to its 2017 number- 59.18%. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav is contesting for this seat. 

In 2017, the BJP won 49 of 59 seats, Samajwadi Party won just 8 seats, while BSP and Congress won one seat each.  This result becomes more interesting when you consider the context. Eight of the 16 districts are home to a substantial number of Yadav population- roughly can be broken down to 29 of the 59 seats that went to polls in the third phase.
