Amethi is one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. Amethi constituency comprises five assembly segments. In terms of district Amethi and Rae Bareli fall under this constituency.
The Amethi seat came into existence in 1967 and has remained a Congress-dominated constituency since then. Its first member of parliament was Vidya Dhar Bajpai of INC, who was reelected in 1971. In the 1977 election, Ravindra Pratap Singh of the Janata Party became its MP. Singh was defeated in 1980 by Sanjay Gandhi of the INC. 1981 by-election was won by his brother, Rajiv Gandhi who represented the constituency until 1991.

The by-election held that year was won by Satish Sharma of the INC, who was reelected in 1996. Sanjay Singh of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) defeated Sharma in the 1998 election. The wife of Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, then represented the constituency from 1999 to 2004. Her son Rahul Gandhi succeeded her and held the seat for the longest period, from 2004 to 2019 but lost to Smriti Irani in 2019.

Since its creation, the Amethi Lok Sabha has been considered to be one of the bastions of INC where it came to power 13 times with a success rate of a whopping 81%. BJP won 2 times with a success rate of 13% with the latest win coming in the 2019 elections where it wrested power away from the INC.
