Punjab Elections – A Report

By the end of 20th February’s Punjab elections, the overall voter turnout was recorded at 71.92%, Far lower than the 2017 count of 77.20%.

A total of 1304 candidates competed for the 117 seats- 1209 male, 93 women and two transgenders. 231 represented national parties, 250 from state parties, 362 from unrecognized parties, and 461 stood as independent candidates.

The outcome of 2017’s Punjab Assembly election was decisive; the Indian National Congress won 77 out of 117 total seats. The absolute dominance of the INC pushed the SAD and the BJP combine to a distant third place with only 18 seats. The surprise new entrant as the chief challenger ended up being the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), winning 20 seats and forming the official opposition in Punjab
