Manipur Phase-2: A Report

As per the Turnout App, the second phase of Manipur elections saw about 88.23% voter turnout out of the overall figure of 8.3 lakh eligible voters — 4,18,401 males, 4,28,968 females, and 31 transgender people expected to exercise their franchise. The 2017 election’s turnout stood at 86%  

Notable political heavyweights in the fray include former three-time chief minister O Ibobi Singh and ex-deputy CM Gaikhangam Gangmei, both from Congress.  

The second phase has 92 candidates including 2 female candidates. Phase-2 covers 22 assembly seats including 11 Scheduled Tribal seats spread over 6 districts. A fact to be noted is that out of the 92 candidates, 17 have criminal cases filed against them. Furthermore, three candidates have declared cases related to crime against women including one related to rape (IPC Section-376). One candidate has declared cases related to ‘attempt to murder’ (IPC Section-307) against himself.
